This summer I was fortunate enough to teach my own class, and I learned something really quickly with third graders...they love to tattle! That got old pretty fast so I made my very own tattle jar! When students would begin to tattle, I would simply divert them to the jar so they could write down their thoughts. Some days I would read the papers, other days I would simply toss them out. None the less, the students got their tattles out, and I didn't have to hear 100 a day! This idea would be great in any elementary classroom, or even at home with the kiddos!
I also posted this lovely sign by the jar, so they could decide if they were making good decisions.

ReplyDeleteLove this! I typed up one of my own to put in my classroom today. My first graders LOVE to tattle, so I am hoping this will cut down on some of it. Thanks so much for sharing!!
ReplyDeleteI teach 1st grade, too. I know it's only been a couple days for you but how is it working? How do they do with the actual writing? :-)
DeleteHow's it working for you Ann? I just started it with first graders as well. I can't read half of them but the problem I'm having now is I made the rule that only one person can be writing there tattle at a time and they can not go to it during a lesson. So when they get a chance there fighting. The tattles are so ridiculous...
DeleteI think my 3rd grader's teacher would love this. I volunteer once a week in his class and those 3rd graders are tattling masters! I will have to make this up to take tomorrow!
ReplyDeleteLOVE this!!!! would you be mad if I copied this. My husband is a graphic designer so he could do this fast. If you don't want people to copy I can understand. please e-mail.

I want this for my house!!! Hopefully this will curb some of the "tattling"...most of the time, they don't even care if I do anything about it, they just want me to acknowledge that it happened and that they told me. :) Please let me know if you are opposed to us copying this! Thanks so much!!!
ReplyDeletePrintable is now available!

I am a director in a Early Care and Education center...I am not going to put this in my child care classrooms...but rather my office...so when the teachers come to talk to me they can read it and make the right decision!
ReplyDeleteI love this! Thanks so much ;) I have 4 little girls from 1st grade down to 2 years, and this has been a very big topic in our house lately! ;) If they were old enough for the tattle jar, we'd be doing that as well! :)
ReplyDeleteoh yeah, loved Meshell's comment! ;) hehehe

Love this, but the printable is tiny. Do you happen to have a link to a full sized version?
ReplyDeleteI think you could add: someone is breaking the law. we were so taught not to tattle, that we didn't tell important things either.
